The History of Hair Extensions

Different versions of hair extensions have been used as a beauty product since the days of the Pharaohs, with fashion trends either promoting or detracting their use in modern times. The evolution of hair pieces has been influenced greatly by political and social attitudes regarding fashion and beauty.

Synthetic hair received less attention during the majority of the 1800s. During that time, most people utilized their natural hair. However, during the Romantic and Mid-Victorian eras, many women experimented with hair pieces. One of the most iconic hair pieces during the 20th century was the pompadour, a rather conspicuous hair style that resembled a tea pot.

However, during the Romantic and Mid-Victorian eras, many women experimented with hair pieces. During the 1920s, people often wore more subdued hair pieces to match the “less-is-more” attitude of the time. As the years went by, long hair came back into fashion, and by the 1940s-50s, large wigs became popular. These larger hair pieces represented a characteristic extravagance.

Both synthetic and natural hair was often worn around this time. As we rolled into the 1980s, however, there was yet another shift as more women preferred natural hair. Extravagant wigs were used primarily by stage performers.

By the 1990s, wigs and other hair extensions had become affordable for the average person, owing to their decline as a statement of beauty and wealth in the mid-20th century. This allowed the common person to try out a variety of styles to match different seasons and outfits, therefore making extensions a rather commonly used product.

A few popular celebrities may have played a role in maintaining the popularity of hair pieces over the years, such as Victoria Beckham, Dolly Parton, and Naomi Campbell. As manufacturers of synthetic hair went on producing higher quality and more realistic hair, their use among the general population became more common yet less noticeable.
